Recently my 89 bronco has been idling rough at times, smooth at others. The RPMs also surge and drop off when idling. The Bronco is sluggish at times when I give it gas and OK at other times. It stalled on me last night when I was driving about 10mph, but started up again just fine. Also I have a loud whine/hum coming from the fuel pump that is under the seat on the drivers side.
I think the fuel pump is bad, but I'm not sure. I'd replace it, but I discovered that there are two fuel pumps in the Bronco with one being in the tank. I really do not want to fool with the gas tank again (having replaced two of them) unless I have to. Would I be OK just to replace the pump on the frame or do they both need replaced?
I finally get my 85 Bronco running perfect and the 89 goes out, just my luck. Thanks for any ideas.
I wouldn't suggest just replacing the pumps with your problem. The easiest way to check to see if it is a fuel related problem is to get a fuel pressure tester and hook it up to the fuel rail. There is a schrader valve (looks like a tire valve stem) that the gauge hooks up to. You can check your fuel pressure there.
Just because the High Pressure pump makes noise does not mean it is bad. Mine has made noise for 5 years and still works great!
I'm sure it's possible to have a fuel pump running but not pumping but that is not my experience. I have replaced several, and the only time I had a problem was when the pump was making NO noise.
I would disconnect the wire to the external pump, simply because it's easier, then in a quiet place, switch on the ignition and listen for the in-tank pump. If both pumps are running, then you probably have either a clogged fuel filter or a bad fuel pressure regulator, assuming that the problem is really insufficient fuel.
I decided to get a fuel pump - maybe not the most prudent thing to do, but I think it fixed the problem. I installed the new pump (the external one) and fired up the Bronco. The engine ran very smooth and the RPM's held steady. Also the new pump is MUCH quieter than the old one.
However, I can't test it further because when I turn the ignition key, it is loose and the car won't start. The blasted rod that comes off the key and goes to the switch won't push the switch into the start position. I did some searching and I think it is a bad ignition actuator. I spent a couple hours trying to tear the steering column apart to get to the rod and couldn't. I think I'll put it back together tomorrow and push the rod manually to start the car and then pay someone else to work on it.
