6.5-7 MPG issue

Hey guys so I think I have an issue but I might know the answer to a certain degree. My issue is 6.5-7 MPG on average commuting while driving like a normal person. So I have 91 f150 351w e4od 4x4. 35s and a 4 inch lift which is part of my issue and here’s the kicker 3.55 rear end gears. Could it just be the tire to gear ratio that’s messing me up so badly or could there be something else?

Is this something that just started, or has the mileage always been that bad?

Well I’ve just started driving it regularly so I’ve never checked the mpg since it was just a farm pickup that barley got used. But the last 2 months I’ve really noticed it though

Your mileage isn't ever going to be good in that configuration. But what you're reporting is lower than it should be. Do the KOEO tests, it wouldn't surprise me in the least if your ECT is bad.

So what is a KOEO test and what is a ECT. I have a scan tool for my truck. And I do also plan on doing a 4.11 swap this summer with a ZF5 which hopefully will help.

KOEO = Key On Engine Off

ECT = Engine Coolant Temperature sender

If you've got a basic OBD2 scan tool, it won't work with this truck, you'll need something like an Innova 3145, or read the blink codes. (Personally, I'd rather sandpaper the arsehole of an alligator in a phone booth, than read blink codes, but you do you.)

Our PCM's dont know that our trucks have cats, there's nothing to tell PCM the cats are there, like newer trucks, that have O2 sensor after the last cat to show a difference. O2 sensor is how old?

So, are you calculating mpg bassed off of the trip odometer? If so, with 35s your speedo will be way inaccurate. Could be part of the problem.

I probably do need to replace the o2 I didn’t know last time it was changed. The way I did mpg was through my gps and my tank levels

That is no good either because these fuel gauges are notoriously inaaccurate. You need an accurate measure of the distance travelled and the fuel consumed, a gps is better than your ODO at this point so that part is fine but start with a full tank and use the amount of fuel needed to refill the tank to the same point(when the filler shuts off) as the fuel measure for the calculation. You don't have to completely drain the tank you could only run it down to an indicated 1/4 or 1/2 tank for example. the more you repeat that the more accurate the average of them all will be and this will also give you an better idea of just how far off the fuel gauge is.
