Just curious if anyone ever sprayed these boards with rubberized undercoat? Hate that you can’t keep them looking good and was just considering it while trying to clean them up. If you have what did you do to prepare them, like sand them down or use an attachment in a drill? Thx

I don’t know, but I have those on my ‘18 F150 and dislike them for the reason you mentioned. Plus, the chrome is starting to bubble in a few spots. It’s almost as if they are rusting from underneath and pushing the chrome finish up. The bubbles haven’t popped through the chrome finish yet, but I would imaging that’s coming. Will be trading it soon. My new F250 will have black running boards, so I’ll be glad to be done with the chrome angular ones.

My experience with the black running boards from my 16 f150 (probably similar but check) is that the support for the plastic is a fiberglass rod. I wasn't too fond of this because I have some big friends and mine bent a lot. I swapped the fiberglass rod for a steel one from a local steel shop for 60 bucks. It will rust out eventually but then its only another 60 bucks.

I have a 2017 Superduty...S**T chrome on those baby's got my truck in June of 2018 brand new was replacing running boards by Dec 2018 because of bubbling...replaced 2 more times while under warranty....truck still under warranty and i could of used another set Ford said nope no more thats it...pay $80,000 for a truck and chrome starts peeling in 6 months....
Don't use rubberized undercoating, that stuff is generally not intended to be a traffic coating and won't stand up to foot traffic. You can coat the bottoms with the rubberized stuff, but not the wear surface. If anything, I'd look into a bed liner, something like Line-X or Raptor-liner, that would likely work just fine.
If you don't like the fact the running boards always look dirty. You won't like a rubberized coating/Line-x/Rhino Lining and such. Once they get dirt on them it wont come clean.
While it's not a be all end all solution, my running boards look much better now that I have:
1. Installed front mud flaps. Mine are Weather Tech no-drill, they are comically oversized. But they work. Keeps the whole side of the truck much cleaner.
2. After washing I treat the running boards with a spay wax-finish-topcoat product. Memory fails as to what brand, so use what ever you like. It causes water to bead up and run off like on the painted areas of the truck. Seems to stay somewhat cleaner.
But I live in Georgia so I don't get salty snow slush stuff. Just never ending road spay.
nobody has tried this? I thought if their was a way to disassemble the chrome angle running boards, separate the black plastic from the chrome. Spray the bottom and top with line-x they would last longer and be easier to clean. Don't know if this is possible maybe someone will chime in with these, I don't have my truck yet to look at. I do plan on looking into this and my truck will be getting line-x bedliner when or if it arrives.

My experience as well. Had rock rails on a wrangler that i sprayed with DIY bedliner. Looked fantastic but absolutely held dirt like crazy.
