What happened? Did you cross thread?
I've never had issues with my spark plugs cross threading and I have 450k miles on my truck. I always clean that area first then start turning in a left-hand direction until I feel the first thread then turn it on in.

I’m betting the “what happened” was the classic spark plug blowing out and OP wants to know when the right thread heads came into existence.
OP, I’m not even sure those heads actually showed up until the next body style came into being. All I would recommend on the new heads is the new Ford recommendation of 28 ft/lbs of torque for the plugs.

I am quite sure that if you were to purchase new heads from Ford you would get the updated castings
And I hear tell of aftermarket reman heads that have all 8 spark plug holes fixed with the repair kits
I believe the problem heads were '97-'07 (F series) for blowing out the spark plugs (loose plug leads to thread failure)
The problem was addressed in TSB 7-15-2
The 2 piece spark plug breaking off when you try to tune them up is TSB 8-7-6 and is model years 04-08
I still think the modular motors were some of the best ones Ford made but WTH

you know how many folks still can’t do that???
it’s sad folks are having blown plugs in 2022 when it’s 100% operator error
it’s time to change mechanics or learn to install plugs

I am a humble mechanic and am scared as sheet of those motors
It does not have to be operator error or mechanic malfunction to make those plugs leap out of there
They do it on their own. I put my daughter thru college fixing Fords muff ups
And omg that was back then we got eco boosts now that puke all over
Fat wallets for us techs

If you have a 2000 f150 they should be Romeo Heads and you can check by looking on the passager side of the engine just above the exhaust manifold at the front of the head. The number there should read D-24-D (or something like that) for Remeo HEADS and just a number for Winsor. The Romeo's heads are PI-type like on the 5.4 2v engines 1999-2014. They were first installed in F150 2001 up to and replaced the Windsors 4.6 2v.
