it just seems that people are spending around $3,000 there might be an after market product out there. for less money and better quality lets face it ford does'nt really give a good Warrantee
i just wanted an alternative to the ford head if i have a problem ( the spark plugs are due in my 2001 excursion)
the main reason i asked this question was if when changing plugs my ford heads have a problem i can't see blowing money on new heads with the same defects
LxMan1- Definitely! I would have gotten more HP if I would have left the combustion chambers alone, but I didn't want to have to run Premium gas all the time.
I had been waiting for about 2 years to do the swap and only got serious about getting the parts in the last year. I wish I would have swapped heads sooner.
Now I just need to focus on making that intake manifold flow better. Ford really didn't change the design of the PI intake on our trucks. So I don't think I'm fully taking advantage of the better flowing heads.
Im sorry guys.. What are PI heads? What does the PI stand for?
BTW, Ted, that is a great page you linked. I am going to do a 5.4 motor swap but before I install the new motor I want to do a little engine work to it.. I am kinda qurious about these PI Heads. What kind of power increase was it? Tire smoking increase or effeciant increase? Reguardless I want to look into it.
PI = Power Improved. Ford redesigned the modular heads starting in '99. The PI heads have a smaller, heart shaped combustion chamber, 2mm larger exhaust valve and overall flow better than a stock non-PI head.
I would have liked to have done a before/after dyno, but I don't have anything close to my house. Prior to the headswap, I could spin and start to smoke the tires from a standstill with no brakes.
No I can get them to smoke without a problem. I don't know if that means a 5 or a 25 HP increase, but I'm happy.
And my mileage has been the same as it was over the summer months. Since my mileage usually drops 1-2 MPG over the winter months, I'm hoping that will mean an increase when they stop putting the winter gas in the pumps and the temps warm back up.
