strange noise

Today I changed my oil and also put in a new IPR from Riffraff. The one I pulled had been in there over 10 years so I figured it was time. After draining the HPOP res then refilling it I figured it would be hard to start. It started right up, amazing. It was missing and vibrating but what bothered me was a noise that sounded like someone was standing there hitting a piece of tin, strange. I went around the block and it seemed to smooth out but hey, it was time for dinner. What's more important, right? lol

Hi Glenn, hope you and your wife doing well.

After a little maintenance I am not sure how much I would worry about it since it cleared up. If it does it again when you restart the truck I would start doing some troubleshooting.

Any chance you data logged the truck truck before and after the IPR replacement?

If I had to wage a guess, I would guess that the torque converter cover is 1) cracked by the starter 2) not properly installed or bent by the starter, and with the miss from air in the HPOP system causing a vibration the said shield was hitting the oil pan.
Just my guess, I have seen a few oil pans destroyed from that shield.

Thanks Ben, we are doing good as I hope you are too! I looked at my scan gauge just after starting it up and my numbers were all over. Today they looked normal, can't believe that air got out so fast.

Bart, just after starting it today I climbed under there and felt and listened and no noise. Truck ran great so I'm happy. Thanks for your input!

Hey Glenn

Sometimes the injector can sound like that from what I've heard over the years of starting them up after swapping injectors out. But I start them and run them with starting fluid until they get everything pressurized back up.
Maybe just had a little air in the hpop side.
You guys still driving north for summer and south for winter? If so enjoy yourselves and be careful.

Thanks John, yes we are still doing the crazy 10K miles every summer. The last few years we keep saying "this is the last year". I'm pretty sure this is for sure the last year. After 15 years we are both sick of it.

Man, end of an era. I can't blame you. I hope you still can do some more local easy trips.

If we keep this place down here we still have to figure out a way to get out of here when the 115 + degrees hits!
