Hi everyone.. I'm new to diesel engines and am looking at a 2005 F-350 with a 6.0 liter engine..
is that a good motor?
I was thinking a 6.7 is what I need but this SEEMS like a good truck..i need one that will pull a 35 - 40 ft wheel..
any input would be greatly appreciated!
The 6.0 is ok(ish), when it is in stock form, when it's modified the world of problems start
If you have service history check out for engine oil cooler replacement, if you don't have records or if it was done like five years, replace it, for peace of mind, if you don't do that, it will go boom boom and then the engine will
Also, delete the EGR
Recent HPOP and injectors replacement is ideal, get the oil cap off and get a borescope in, if it looks sludgy, run away, if it looks clean, it's good
Key thing: maintenance, oil changes as recommended by ford and using good oil make the problematic parts (HPOP, injectors) last longer
The 6.0 has not had the greatest reliability record. When you got a good one, they were great. But they did have a lot of issues. Personally I would skip it in favor of the 6.7L just because of the increase of power and torque. I pull a 30' fifth wheel with mine, and it pulls like a dream. Pulling one the size you are talking about I would definitely go with the 6.7L. And definitely the F350. You're going to need it for that much trailer. Good luck.

What is the price of it and how many miles are on it?
If you're willing to invest the time & effort to learn about the 6.0 they can get a great platform. Usually best to do your own wrenching as paying for work gets expensive really fast. In todays' crazy used card market it's definitely the "budget friendly" option as 6.7L's and even old 7.3s are at super high price levels. Highly recommend you head over to the 6.0 forum, a bunch of GREAT guys over there and a ton of good information.
The newest 6.0's are now 14-years old so keep that mind. Lots of little things start breaking with age.
Understand that you'll need to leave it stock and pulling something that big its not going to win any races, but you'll still make it just fine. One of our members here (Troverman) routinely tows a 14k gooseneck with his F350 dually.
Definitely try and find an 05+ truck as the F250 GVWR was increased to 10k and 11.5k for the 350 SRW. Depending on trailer weight you'll probably need a 350 to be legal, even though the 250 is basically the same truck.
I own a F350 6.0 dually, and I wouldn't want to pull a camper that big with mine. Will it handle the weight - yes; will it pull it at comfortable highway speeds - no, at least not for long. For something that big, you want a 6.7 dually. However much more it costs, you will save at least as much in repairs, down time, & frustration.
I have had my 06 6.0 for 6 years. It wasn't my first choice. I wanted a Super Duty, short box, 4x4, and gas was my preference. Nothing at the time piqued my interest. If you are going to go into the world of a 6.0 there are several things you want to watch out for, be aware of, and expect.
Three months into owning mine, the oil cooler plugged up, EGR went to hell on me, and the radiator needed replacement. I was able to get it fixed for $2,500 including labor. Got it home. I take really good care of it. Motorcraft filters, archoil 9100, and Rotella oil is my maintenance plan. I do not put a lot of miles on it. It tows all four of my trailers.
If a 6.0 has made this far in life, it has likely been worked on. If the work was done right, it is a good engine. If the work was sloppy, expect to revisit the issues. Since the new oil cooler, EGR delete, and new radiator it has been a good runner for me. Be wary, be aware it could take some work.
