Hey Guys
I ended up biting the bullit borrowed a hoist and stand and pulled my 360 for detailing. pulled the housing and clutch off to fit on the stand and I got to thinking how old the clutch is? Might be original for all I know? I havent changed one of these in many moons so not to sure what to look for? I wasnt having any problems but Im not sure how to tell how much life is left and whether I should change it out or not. Is there a thickness to measure or how to tell ? Ill add some pics tomorrow.
thx for any info
1st rule of thumb for a PITA labor job: if you are already in for a job, and you don't know how long something has been in use, change it out. Penny wise, many dollar foolish.
I've replaced several clutches for many reasons but never due to worn disk or pressure plate. While you're in there, replace the pilot bushing and release bearing and consider getting new pressure plate bolts and flywheel bolts. Summit Racing sells Arp kits for both. Also resurface the flywheel.
Reasons I've replaced clutches: Leaky antifreeze and/or oil, bad release bearing, previous owner replaced clutch but did not surface the flywheel, and on newer vehicles...leaky release cylinder and failing dual mass flywheel
Try to find a machine shop that can resurface the flywheel since the clutch will be new.
To make installing the engine easy, just hang the pressure plate on the pilot shaft with the disc on the splines. That way after the engine and bellhousing are bolted together just bolt the clutch to the flywheel. A pair of 7/16” studs about 4” will guide the engine to the bellhousing.
That is how I always did this job if the truck had a power take off and I did not have to pull the carpet and transmission cover.

Hey thx guys for all the help, Any suggestions on a decent clutch kit. Ive been pricing the OE, LUK , anything i should be looking for?
My truck is a three on the tree so ill likey drop the tranny before I put the engine back, although it did slide out very easily, I unbolted the tranny from the cross member and jacked it up a couple inches removed the 4 bolts and it slipped right out!
