I am getting ready to do a drain and refill of the cooling system and the transmission and was wondering if someone could tell me how much coolant I will need and if the transmission drain plug has a sealing washer that I need to replace. This is on a 2017 6.7 with the 6r140.
You won’t get the entire volume out with the radiator drain. With the primary cooling system you’ll be able to drain about 5-6 gallons. I typically drain until it stops, top the system with distilled water (+/- 5 gallons), run it up to operating temperature, drain again, fill with 4.5 gallons of the appropriate coolant - yours might want orange, or yellow; fill with what it had from the factory. With the secondary cooling system, you do the same, just add 1000 MF’s trying to get the drain open - only a 10 jointed midget would be able to open the thing easily. I change mine about every 50k miles, so don’t worry much about getting every drop out.
