I have a 1997 f-350 7.3 with a automatic transmission. A while back I noticed that when I put the truck in any gear(park to drive, drive to reverse and so forth) that it would kind of make a hard knocking sound when it went into gear. And when I let off the gas pedal all the way it will do a hard knock that’s kind of the same like something disengaging and then when I put about half pedal it knocks back in the same way. The past couple days I’ve noticed it get worse and seems to hit a lot harder. Today I was driving it and around 40 MPH and when my foot is at a certain level on the gas pedal a clanking happens like grinding noise almost like gears not lining up and chattering together. It kind of goes away when I give it more gas or let off more. Any help in helping me diagnose would be great! Thank you
Just to be clear… jack the rear end up put the truck in neutral and move the shaft back and forth. Just to make sure. Other than that, mine had a bit of play between the trans and diff making a similar noise. Mine was manual but could be similar
No problem. Yeah if theres any resistance on the driveshaft (tires on the ground) it has to be perfectly level to check u joints like that. Always best to lift the rear end. Just for fun Here’s a pic of a u joint I lost last night. Happy vday
