So I am finally driving my fridge 4x4. I am noticing that fluid is leaking from the sector shaft. Looked at rock auto and it states a 3 tooth style. Really don’t want to take it apart and wait for parts. Does anyone know if a three tooth is correct and are the f100 4x4 boxes the same as the 2wd boxes( I am assuming they are the same. This is not power steering just a manual steering box. Does it require to pulled the steering box from the frame or can the seal be replaced on the truck just remove the pitman arm?
another question that has me puzzled is that the steering box has a wire coming out of the cap. Does anyone know what this is for? I can’t seem to find anything about it in the shop manual.
oh yes one my question. Can someone spoon feed me the part number for the tie rod ends on the 4x4 from Napa. Local store employees are having difficulty figuring out which toe rod is correct.
I was able to get tie rod ends for my 59 4x4 at Napa in Marana Az
i can check the Napaonline.com website to see if it comes up, otherwise I can call them and see if they can locate the correct part number.
the steering boxes on the 4x4’s are different than the 2wd boxes
If you remove the steering arm from the gear box, it is possible to replace the seal, however if you remove the whole box it is attached to about a 40 inch shaft up to the steering wheel. Will need to remove steering wheel and retaining clip on the top. Probably will have to remove the drivers side exhaust manifold and move exhaust pipe out of way (if you have dual exhaust)
Yesterday I figured out the horn and got it working.
It’s a 60 f100 4x4.
Weird thing happened last night when I went to visit a friend. I turned to go around a round about and the steering wheel wasn’t in the same position to go straight after the turn on my way back home. It stayed in the new position to go straight for the rest of the drive but it did have the hairs on my neck up in the air. After the turn it was a slow ride home. The sector shaft is splined correct? nothing out of the ordinary when I inspected the steering linkage.
thanks for the part numbers. What about the drag link? None of the tie rods are plunging. They just won’t take grease.
Everytime I take this thing out for a drive I have something new to work on, 😂😢 I guess that is something to deal with when bringing trucks back from the dead.
At this point for safety reasons I would take the box apart and inspect it. I had a similar thing happen when I first drove mine back in 75, I removed the box and found a big piece of the worm gear had broken off..
So I called a local steering box company. We talked and brain stormed for about 30 minutes. Last night I fixed the horn and I think I put the horn button in the wrong section after showing my friend when I went to his place. There is no slop whatsoever literally I can turn the steering wheel just a little bit and I can see the tires start to turn. I put the horn button back on in the correct orientation and I am going to drive around the neighborhood (slowly) which is a country dirt road with very few houses.
yes I am that smart, 😂🥴
I called Napa auto and I can get those tie rods but they can’t get the drag link. Any other sources?
59-60 4x4 steering boxes are different than 61 to later. 4x4 boxes are bigger than 2WD’s. There is a sector shaft seal that will probably fix the leak. I agree I would check the box out thoroughly. The shaft and worm tend to pit up alot. Good luck.
I put a box out of a bigger truck (F500), in my F100. It's a bigger box with more mechanical advantage. I think that's why, it just makes it steer easier! I had to change a few bolt holes on the frame and the location of the clutch return spring hook, but it works great. I run 205 tires and it really isn't very hard to steer, even while parking. I only mention it in case you end up dumping your original and look for something different.

I''m not familiar with the 4X4 boxes, can you explain the difference besides they are bigger?
It uses a bigger housing, larger roller on sector shaft and 1-2 ton shaft and worm. The roller bearings are larger as well. The end of the sector shaft where the pitman arm attaches is the same as 1/2 and 3/4 ton 2WDs.
