power windows are inconvenient when the battery is dead or you cross a stream, mid-door deep.
I actually have a friend that will not buy a car / truck with power windows because "if you crash into a river, the windows won't go down and you'll be stuck..." Funny... just too funny....
I've got mixed emotions on power windows. It's nice not to have to climb over to drop the passanger window... But it's also nice that there's no motor to die with the window down as it starts to rain.... hard....
The most practical way to bring the Bronco back, in my opinion, would be to put it on a F-150 frame and offer it with the 4.6L and 5.4L 3v V8's. Offer the XL package for people who want simple, and the XLT for the moderate folks who want some, but not all creature comforts, and the Lariat for the ones who want to ride in style.
Is there someway we could start an on-line petition to bring the Bronco back. After we had all the people in favor sign it we could send it to the CEO of Ford Motor Company.
If someone knows how to get this started please let us know!!
I forgot to mention...The Bronco would run unopposed as far as competition is concerned, there is no K-5 Blazer or Ram Charger in production today. That would be another advantage for it.
i'd like the see the 66-77 model, with the orginal running gear from the t-case to the ground. stick a 4.6L as a base engine, with the optional 5.4L 3V . maybe a 4 speed auto, with a 6 speed as an option.
fix up the door and body seals, and some of the spots that are prone to rust out.
A new Bronco, IMO, should have:
1) removable top, full or half it doesnt matter to me
2) factory roll bar
3) solid front and rear axles, D60/D60 would be nice but impractical, prolly a D44/D44 or D44/8.8 to shave costs
4) dump the modular engine program, get back the 302/351. We all would love a Powerstroke or a 460, but it aint gonna happen.
5) the tranny choice should be a c6 auto or a 5 speed manual
6) my vote is for the f-150 frame, personal preferance
7) manual t-case, hubs
8) selectable lockers as a dealer option
9) truck style tailgate
10) enough clearance to stuff 35s on it w/o a lift
Personally, If you have to build a bronco (not what I choose to drive) I would recommend a retro style like the first ones that are so popular to rebuild today. They pulled it off with the t-bird, why not a bronco?
I love the way the retro T-bird looks, but I believe ford made a huge mistake with it. I mean, they took a great running, reliable mid-range priced car and made it cost, what, $35K? I had a '96 with 120,000 miles on it and it didn't burn oil, would still haul *** and was, quite possibly, the most reliable car I ever owned. If they do that to the Bronco, which I think the public would swarm all over, who could afford one? BTW, if they do bring it back, it should be based on the 150 frame, and have the top removable all the way to the windshield.
I see some of you aren't going to budge on the half ton frame.
Why not something like the ACTUAL truck lineup? Light duty and Super Duty Bronco's? It don't need no imagination. Take the expy and excu, shorten them and hack the roofs off. The light duty Bronco can be for "soccer moms and corporate dads" while the Super Duty Bronco's should be stripped down no frills trucks for people like us, ... and maybe rap stars for their music videos.
personally id do it offa the same frame used in 78/79. id just use the psd engine in it and a standard tranny with none of this shift to 4x4 on the fly stuff. make it a truck. true tree stump pulling power and makeit affordable!
I think a new Bronco should be a no frills basic type model, kinda' like (don't flame me) the Nissan Xterra.
Nissan had a good idea when they came out with the Xterra, the Pathfinder had become an over optioned pig just like all the other SUV's that every other company is now making.
What we need is a tough, rugged 4X4 with a minimum of power stuff to go wrong in the boonies.
Here in the desert you see a lot of Soccer Mom SUV"S but I also see a lot of Xterras and they've always got scrapes and dents so you know thier being used for what they were intended.
My vision of the new Bronco would be based on the Explorer, but very basic...
2 doors, pickup style tailgate
V8
5 speed
Real 4 wheel drive with a 2 speed transfercase
good sized tires
Vinyl seats and vinyl floor mats
no carpeting
no sound deadining
no back seat
no bs
and it would be priced at about 20K
