Toby Kieth is a thorn in the CMA's side. Nashvilles side ect. Country has become so conservative that its not like the old country. Remember Waylon, Coe, Haggard, Hank and so on. They were basically all out in your face siging about drinking, smoking, partying, and a lot of other stuff. Now they want to make it politically correct and non abrasive to sensitive ears.
Toby Kieth won't follow what a record labels wishes or rules. He will make the album as he wants it. Not as they would like it. And he has the power to do it. A new artist has play by the rules
Which is why I buy very few new country albums. I prefer the old stuff. Real country. Some of these new artists are making what they call country which is pop music if you look closely. The new stuff I buy is from people like Toby Kieth.
Some of the artists are a bunch of hypocritcal snobs. They talk about how country is supposed to be unoofensive and respectful to everyone. But they turn around and make songs that break their own rules.

thats what im talkin about, waylon jennings, johnny horton, hank williams sr and jr, alabama, charlie daniels, george strait, garth brooks, *older* kenny chesney, rhett akins, chris ledoux..i could go on...thats what COUNTRY is supposed to be like..not this city slicker crap thats just about the money and some flashy lights. its supposed to be about country life and culture. the movie "pure country" shows what i mean, stay true to its roots

The problem now is that the kinder gentler country has attracted the sensitive ears and are becoming a real buying power. And the buying power is what directs the direction of the music. Sad
See that shirt she had on "FUTK" I think she said it stood for:
Forgiveness, Understanding, Togetherness, & Kindness. Yeah, like were that stupid. I'll turn the radio when there on. Can't stand them.

honda, when I hear a "chicks" song, the station gets changed, too.
BTW, anyone ever get tired of "this one's for the girls" by martina mcbride? I really am starting to hate that song. Gimme Leanne Womack anyday over her for a female singer.
Martina Mcbride ain't all that bad. However that song really gets on my nerves. Trisha Yearwood was a real good singer, wonder what ever happened to her?
I think you where dead on about Toby Keith not pandering to the Nashville crowd. Then to top it all he really ticks them off by teaming up with perennial outcast (outlaw) Willie Nelson. I'll believe the CMA's mean something when they let David Allen Coe stand up and sing "If That Ain't Country". That will offend the tender ears and sensibilities of the of the PC crowd.
As for Johnny Cash, I think he should have gotten Video of the Year, after that the CMA was just wrap itself with his class, kind of like when MTV had him nominated this year. Had no class of its own and tried to borrow some by adding him to the program, even if he didn't show up.
I watched it, I really don't like country but I liked Johnny Cash. Is it just me or is Hank Williams jr getting even odder? I do like lots of rock, but I'll listen to some country, when I was a kid out on the farm we couldn't get rock stations until late at night.
Toby got ripped off! I am not surprised, though. The CMA has really never given him the credit that he deserves. He's a great songwriter, singer, and performer. He, like Johnny Cash, is a real artist. I just hope that he isn't honored for all the great things he's done for country music after he is dead.
I picked up Toby's new CD on Tuesday and its great! American Soldier is definitely worth a listen. Fact is, he makes no apologies about who he is and what he stands for. That is what makes a real artist.
Johnny Cash is my favorite singer/artist, but I do have to agree with you guys that toby shoulda won, since Cash's were mostly (all?) remakes. However, Cash got screwed at the MTV awards (I didn't watch cause i hate mtv, i just heard about it) when he got beat by justin timberlake. I mean, c'mon, how can they even put them in the same group for anything, Cash is a legend and timberlake is just some crappy rich kid who thinks he's from the inner city. And I agree that country music is going in the wrong direction. I think the only current REAL country artists are Travis Tritt, Alan Jackson, and Toby Keith, ( I love this bar is gonna be a classic). OK, done venting.
The man has about 1/100th of the talent Johnny Cash had.
He can't sing (the man cannot carry a tune), he can barely play the guitar, and until he (or more likely one of his advisors) got the bright idea that he could cash in on the current wave of patriotism, he was no more than a third rate country "Outlaw wannabe" with a couple #1s.
Join the club of about 50 other young "country" artists who've had one or two #1s and will never be heard from again.
Johnny Cash was largely ignored by main stream country music for most of his career, as were the other legendary names mentioned in this thread.
Would he have won the awards had he not recently passed away? Maybe not, but IMHO YES. He deserved every one of them. Hurt was a defining song and video in the life of a legend. The fact it was a cover was irrelevent. (Like Toby Keith writes all his songs). I doubt many here have even heard the original.
You couldn't force me to watch the CMAs these days. Pure crap.
(With the exception of Allison Krauss.)
Well, I agree with you that Toby doesn't even begin to compare to Cash, but he's definitely no one hit wonder. I recently went to his concert, and it was the biggest show of the year, for the second straight year. And I of course agree that Hurt is a great song, but I think it woulda meant a lot more to me if he had sung something he wrote himself.
I didn't read all the replies, but I do agree that some of the awards should have went to better people.
Someone posted "come on it was a remake" in response to Johnny Cash's video.... what video was that?
Because he has wrote more songs than you'll ever know
