Im still scratching my head about why it blew up also.
The binded slip yoke or blown u-joint theory seems to make sense.
The reason is beyond me, but won't happen again!
I recall using ATF fluid when I changed it a year ago, after searching on FTE for advice.
Now im a little confused about input shafts.
A little clarification would be nice...
I have a 2000 f450 7.3 powerstroke
So it looks like I have a 24T input/output on my Tcase/Tranny.
(I have a ZF-6)
Apparently all of the other engine combos have different teeth.
And Dodge seem to have the same np271/273 but also different teeth counts.
Heres the question:
So I need to find a transfer case from a 7.3 powerstroke because its the only compatible BOLT-IN?
or
Get a different np271 (I want to keep manual) from a dodge or ford, and change the input shaft?
I think the ‘03-07 6.0 powerstroke t-case is the same input shaft as the ‘99-03 7.3 ZF6 t-case. Which is different from ‘99-03 7.3 4R100 t-case.
This will need confirmation as my memory is fading fast... @Y2KW57 is often an encyclopedia of this type of knowledge.
As far as failure goes, the wrong type of ATF has been known to cause catastrophic failure AND there is a lot of mixed information about the ‘correct fluid’. Locked hubs is not a reason for failure, but could contribute if there were other issues. I’ve seen these trucks drive for years on end with locked hubs without failure.
Im back!
Sort of.
Been bizy with a newborn and started looking for a t case.
So I gotta question
Ive been looking for a np271 to replace mine.
No luck.
Looks like I have a 24t input shaft. I was thinking of getting a different and available TC from craigslist and swapping inputs.
But that looks Like A LOT of work.
Might as well get a rebuilt 1 at that point.
So, will a 6.0 with a ZF6's TC fit my 7.3s ZF6 ?
And 1 more question.
Will any 271/273 TC bolt to my ZF6 if I swap out the input shaft?
Specifically, are all np271/273 input bolt patterns (or part that bolts to tranny) the same?
Thanks!
Any Ford NV271 will bolt to it if you swap the Input shaft. The Dodge NV271 you would have to change the tail of it and some other stuff for it to work.
Thanks.
I hope so!
From what I gathered from way too much searching is:
-7.3 with zf6 only 24t
-maybe early V10 zf6 had 24t as well?
-maybe early 6.0 zf6 24t?
-everything else 31t and 34t?
-34t being more common for later years?
I know there's a lot of pro shops out there that know.
I'll give it a few more hours of searching tho!
Btw, the quest for this info is nice to know because just about every craigslist t case
around here is still bolted up.
It would be a fun hunt, but I don't have time!
