Hey y’all, I’ve got a 1993 f250 7.3 idi 4x4 with the E40D and we just cannot catch a break in terms of issues. We’ve had it for about a year and half of that time it’s been in the shop for transmission issues. We are on our 3rd rebuild and it’s going back to its old issues, various codes, flashing o/d light hard shifts. I’m tired of it and I’ve replaced several sensors to no avail, would a zf5 swap be a plausible fix? My buddy had one and he’s had no issues so far. I like the thought of having a manual in my truck.
What are y’all’s thoughts? Thanks
The ZF5 is as solid as 5 speeds come, so it would definitely be an upgrade. There is quite a bit that goes into swapping them out, best bet is looking for a complete donor truck that is also a 4x4. The E4OD is a good trans too, when its working properly of course. Maybe the transmission expert Mark Kovalsky will see this and chime in. Fixing your E4OD is going to be easier and most likely cheaper than a complete swap. I'm sorry I can't be of more help, other than to bump this thread to the top lol
I think after 2 rebuilds in 18 months I would have found a different shop to work on it,
I had an annoying occasional flashing O/D light for years, especially at start up and when coasting after a long run, I finally cleaned my pins on the connectors behind the gauge cluster and it has ran perfect for the last 18 months,
