I too was more concerned about what people might put IN the tank, because I live around some real idiots.
That said...the tether honestly bothers me more than it helps me, and I've taken them off most vehicles I own. Most gas stations have canopies over the pumps, so being in the rain/snow isn't really that big of a deal unless it's windy. I have never once had to worry about anything getting on the inside of my cap.
With fuel prices rising a locking fuel cap is almost a must, when a family has to decide to buy gas or groceries.....feed the kids and steal the gas. Its simple survival economics. I live in TX and with all the illegals, if it's not locked down its gone. Vehicle thefts are way up, car jackings are up, assault is up, Lock it or lose it, we hear it on the news every day.
