Question 6.0L /w 300K+ Miles Questions

Good Morning Everyone from Kuwait,

Little backstory. I’m in the Army, deployed in Kuwait, and stationed in Germany. I’ve found out I’ll be heading to Texas in November and I’ll be needing a truck to haul my Motorcycles and just because I want one. I got two windows to buy one in Oregon before I head to Texas, April and Sept-Oct.

I’ve been noticing a lot of 300K+ Mile 6.0’s for sale in the price range that I can pay in cash. I grew up with 6.0’s so I’m pretty impartial to them. I’d like information on what I should be looking out for if I decide to buy one (because the obvious bulletproofing, Cold Starting, is it a rust bucket etc.) The last few years in Germany I’ve only had Tundras (I’m sorry, but F150-350’s are expensive in Germany) so my diesel knowledge in the last 7 years has been lacking.

I don’t mind making this my project/forever truck as I love diesels and I’ve been wanting one, but being overseas my options were lacking and expensive AF.

Should I consider buying one /w high mileage, or should I not?

What are things to be looking out for?

Can you still find ‘Crate’ Engines to replace the high mileage one? If so, what’s the rough cost for a brand new one?

What other information/suggestions could you give me?

Thank you so much for your time!

I would not buy a 300K truck as your daily driver. It will be a project and a work-in-progress. A co-worker had a 6.0, it blew up, he had it bulletproofed for $7K, it blew up again, and he bought a Tundra. As much as I enjoy working on vehicles, I want the luxury of not having to depend on a single vehicle to get me around.

Reman/crate info here - https://killdevildiesel.com/collecti...ngine-packages - a ready-to-run engine would far exceed the cost of the truck you might buy.

I would consider a 7.3 if you want diesel fun, with a lot less horsepower ;-)

Retied ARMY at FT Hood, OK I have a 91 F450 dually 7.3 IDI ZF5 speed I no longer need, runs great custom cab and bed. Mechanically sound but needs some fiberglass work and the single stage 20 year old paint needs done. I'll attach some pics when I can.
