Why would a truck come off the line with no axle codes? It is a 9” from the outside. I am wondering what ratio. 3.50 or 3.25. maybe? Where is the tag usually located on the housing? I have had a quick peek, but didn’t see one. Is there an actual stamp on the housing itself? Hopefully there is.
The 17 code is 3.25. The axle model was coded on a metal tag under the pumpkin nuts. With it being gone, it means that your pumpkin has been removed at one time for repair or replacement. The different cast markings on the pumpkin are just foundry marks and casting date codes, nothing more. The only way now to identify what gear you have now is just to pull the pumpkin and count the gear teeth of the ring and pinion gears and do the math.
The info hardly ever lines up but when you break down the #vin it is easily deciphered. On my f350, the info lines up like above. My 72 f250, it lines up pretty close. Not sure on my 70 f250 though. There are also plenty of videos on spinning the tire to figure the gear ratio without opening it up. Here is one for open diff like mentioned above.
