Cannot shift into 4 low

Cannot shift into 4 low
I have a 1995 f150 with the 300 I6+5 speed manual. I cannot shift from four wheel drive to four low, and on the very rare occasion that I do make the shift, I cant get it out and it takes hours of attempts to get out of four low. Any suggestions?

Hose the linkage down with Kroil and let it sit overnight. Then work it a bit, hose it some more and work it again.
Also, you are attempting this with the transmission in neutral correct? I have seen some people skip that step...

Iffy transfer case
It is the going up and down that seizes up, however, recently it has started working very well, on seizing up about 1 out of 15 times. I have been using four low quit a bit with for hauling logs out of the woods, so maybe the increased usage has smoothed things up. I'll have to try soaking it in kroil though.
