Rigid Reverse Bumper Lights Install and Issue

I installed these Rigid Industries 212513BLK Pro Spot Midnight Flush mount lights to upfitter switch #6. I want them to also come on with reverse lights. I used a diode to isolate the 2 power sources. Lights work great with upfitter but not with reverse. I located the reverse wire behind the drivers side taillight by finding the only wire with 12v power when in reverse. The both the factory lights AND the Rigid Lights come on for a second then turn off. They won’t come back on until after I shut the truck completely off. It’s like the truck senses an overload and disables the circuit. Any ideas what’s going on and how to fix it?

I have my lights lights wired to an upfitter and wired to come on in reverse as well. I didn't use a diode. I just ran a wire from the lights and used a tap hooked on to the reverse wire on my drivers side tail light. I have wired them this way on my last three trucks, and haven't had any issues at all. I grounded each light on one or the mounting bolts...spliced the positive wires together...ran one to an upfitter and then ran another wire from the reverse to the lights in the bumper

do you happen to recall which wire it was in the tail light? I’ll try removing the diode, maybe that’s the issue.

Pick up reverse power from the back of the 7 pin trailer connector.

thought of that, but I read somewhere that the truck will think a trailer is hooked up all the time. Not sure if that’s right, just read it.

That did it. Truck didn’t like that diode for whatever reason. All done. Thanks for the help.

A couple things... first is that house wiring on that red wire going up to the bed lights? Secondly, those connectors are not anywhere close to waterproof and will end up corroding and giving you issues down the road. If you cut the waterproof connector off the end of the Rigid, you create a path for water to eventually wick up the wires and get moisture into the light...

Also, with no diodes (you don't need a big bulky box, just a couple small rated diodes that you solder and heat shrink in place) you backfeed circuits. So when your upfitter is on, you are powering the reverse lights in the bed with a much higher rated fuse system.

Sorry to rain on your parade, but that is truly some hokey wiring going on there...

Not true. Truck uses current flow through the regular lighting circuits to detect a trailer.

I agree with this assessment - I wired mine using small diodes and automotive primary wire.
