On the first start attempt of the day my 96 7.3 will not start in the COLD without assistance from a jump box. I have changed the fuel filter and cleaned the bowl, Replaced both batteries with Motorcraft Batteries. I have also replaced the Glow plugs. I have inspected the cable that runs from one battery to the other, it looks good.
I have not checked to see if the fuel heater is working yet and I have not looked at the battery cables that attach to the frame.
I am wondering if the starter is not spinning quick enough but it sounds ok to my ear. I have added diesel clean to the fuel tanks.
After its started it runs great no indication of faulty injectors.
Since you got new batteries (ouch motorcraft must be pricey!) I’d suspect the starter. They sound good till you get a new one and you’ll be surprised. Look under the passenger side of the engine and see if your starter looks like a big tube straight out or if it’s slightly offset
Starts with battery assist suggests fuel issues are not part of the problem. You checked the positive cable paralleling the batteries, but not the other cables.
What are the symptoms? We need more information to help diagnose. Is it cranking, but slow? Does adding a boost box spin the starter faster, or just let you spin at the same speed longer? What RPMs are you turning with freshly-charged batteries? Are you seeing a substantial voltage drop while waiting to start (glowplugs)? What is your outside air temp? After first cold start and letting it warm up a bit, what is a "warm" start like?
Bad positive cable and connections to the starter and bad ground connections and cables to batteries can reduce amps to the starter, resulting in slow cranking. Issues in the glowplug circuit- plugs, under-valvecover wiring harness, rest of harness, +12V feed to the glow plug relay- can result in poor glowplug performance and long cranking times, but cranks at speed. Batteries could be bad, or run down, right from the dealer. Starter could be getting weak.
