Question C6 first timer

i have a 1962 ford f100 2wd. It has a 223 with 3 on the tree. I hate to take the 223 out because it runs so dang good, but i need to change to an automatic transmission, so im gonna pop in a 300 six. I figured i might as well go with a C6. I've never dealt with transmissions before so I did some reading. I want my transmission to pair well with my engine. Any advice on choosing the right C6 type for a daily driver. Im not going full tilt hi preformance, but it isn't going to be a stock 300 six either. So i guess my question is what's the best way to get one? Buy a nonworking C6 and have it rebuilt or just buy one ready to go? Im new to this transmission thing and im on a budget so im looking at price cap as well. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

If you truly are “ on a budget” - then hold what you got. Changing from stock is going to cost you, simply put. You are opening a can of worms and headed down a slippery expensive slope.

Why is it that you think you are going to need to change to an automatic?

What you are considering takes a lot of work since the way the engine mounts in the truck is totally different than any truck that had a 300 I6 in it. I'll let folks who have done that conversion address that.
You can find that combination in a lot of 1980's F150's and vans although some of the later ones will be fuel injected engines and need to be converted to a carb. The C4 would be a better choice since it requires a lot less horsepower to operate. But I don't think Ford used it in trucks after 1979. So, the combination you are looking at would definitely be the easiest to find. If you can find a running and driving donor it will make everything a lot easier.

If going through the trouble, I'd do an AOD. It's pretty much the same amount of work and you'd get OD out of the deal.

tnx for the info guys, much appreciated. This will be the only vehicle i ever need. I need to switch to an automatic because of my left knee. I would rather have a 3 speed with granny gear, but the clutch will eventually trash my knee. Im definatly going to have to pay to have it put in for me. I would like the AOD for highway. may have to rethink this

Especially if you are not doing the work this will not be cheap. If it were my truck though I'd be looking at doing the following.
300 six, will need side mounts to mount.
May need to upgrade the radiator, if you do, get one with a built in trans cooler, if not you need a stand alone cooler for the auto trans.
AOD trans, will need a crossmember to mount the tail shaft mount.
Will need a floor shift, maybe Lokar.
Will need a TV cable, again Lokar.
Will need to modify/replace the driveshaft.

Engine Swap

I'm definitely going to have to pay to have it put in for me.

That one sentence tells me you should sell your truck and buy one that already has an automatic transmission. Just finding a shop to do that may be difficult. This is pure custom work and a lot of it. You could have several thousand dollars in labor plus parts. Before you do this, you need to find a shop that will do it, get an estimate on price and time. Look closely at work they have done. And remember there are a lot of people who have jumped into the custom business who should have kept their job at the tire store.
If you decide to go with this and want an AOD go to this forum and read the sticky at the top of the page. There are plenty of AOD's that have been ruined by people not understanding that TV cable. Here is an interesting thread on the subject with keeping the 223 intact. IMO, the C4 is the best choice for a small engine and the overdrive auto would be more trouble than its worth.Mating 223 to C-4 - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums (ford-trucks.com)
