hello everyone,Im new to the site so ill explain my delima.I purchased a 1976 f150 4 wheel drive years ago.It wasin the middle of a ground up restoration.Ive re installed the wiring harness under the hood,i have power to headlights, wipers and heater. However im not getting signal to my starter from the ignition..Ive checked all grounds and even added a couple, still the same issue.can someone point me in the right direction. Its been years in the making to get this truck to crank over.ITdoes crank if i crossover the solenoid.thanks for any help.
do yo have 12v at the I connection on the solenoid? if so, your solenoid is either bad or not grounded.
is the wiring connected to your neutral start/reverse light switch under the dash on the steering column?
If it is determined that you need to replace the solenoid.................be careful. Some of the replacements are sad; others are better. Try to get a better one.
Make sure you're getting 12V+ from the trigger wire, the one which pushes onto its solenoid terminal, and make sure it's pushed onto the correct small post. Solenoid should be marked for S (starter) and I (ignition). You want S.
thanks for info guys, let me back track some on my post..when this truck was getting the start of its complete rebuild at least 2 trucks were being used.I used the harness that came with the truck. So i guess my question is ,do i need to try using different harness.I have power at coil and starter solenoid, however the ignition switch will not crank the motor. It does crank over when i cross over at solenoid.alsocan someone tell me what the green box style plugs are used for coming from the inside of cab to the engine bay by the ignition control module.?thanks for input
can you clarify what you mean by having power at the solenoid? do you mean power on the I terminal with the key in crank position?
and when you say crossover at solenoid, do you mean shorting the two large lugs, or shorting between the front battery terminal and the smaller I terminal?
I assume your solenoid is mounted tightly to the fender and has a good ground?
If the plugs you are referring to are squarish 4 wire plugs, it is probably the lights. I think there would probably be 3 of them. If its the lights, there will be three of the same on the other side. Pictures work great. Im getting ready to put my wiring harness back in my 72 f250. I did check continuity on everything. Figured I should do that at least. Good luck.
im trying to figure it out again today. My sloenoid is grounded well, motor turns over when i cross the solenoid over using a piece of wire.As far as testing the (i) terminal and the(s) terminal on solenoid ,my test light shows power .as well as testing at the coil..thi as been done with the key in on position..im trying to finish this truck.Which was torn down about 20 years ago by someone else.and he was using 2 or 3 trucks to rebuild this one..iltry uploading pics of the green plugs that are located in engine bay that arent connected to the harness in any way. Thanks for all input.with some help this thing will start using the key.l
You can test for power at the small red wire, the one which plugs onto the S terminal post, and it should only have power when the key is turned to crank the starter. My guess is that it won't. Luckily, the wiring in these trucks is mostly easy enough to access, that you can probably trace it back into the cab without too much trouble.
The I terminal is only used for powering the ignition coil at the full 12V, while the starter cranks. And the I terminal should only have power when the S terminal is receiving power and powering the starter.
