Noticed the boots from the valve cover plenums to the intake spider were shot, so over to Riffraff diesel for boots. Well figured if I am going that far…
ordered the boot kit and new clamps for all the intercooler and intake boots,m, and decided on replacing the plenums with the billet ones from Riffraff. After pulling everything apart I had a panic moment, however after some emails with Clay and him putting up with my nonsense we got the correct bolt pattern figured out. So everything came out today and Im waiting in UPS.
On a side note Clay is great, and was more than helpful.
here is where I called it quits for todays work, intercooler pipes out, spider out, turbo out.
Thanks for posting this picture - definitely like to follow along.
A couple of items you could address while waiting for UPS are the rub points for the power steering hose on the shock tower, and on the pump where it can contact the CAC pipe. Also the engine harness on the driver's side valve cover - tape that up to avoid chaffing/shorts that can happen there. Finally, there is an updated brake pressure sensor harness for that recall harness in the yellow rectangle.
While you're at it, get a power steering pump to the hydro boost hose. I had mine fail on me last time I was out 1,000 miles from home. Apparently they fail often enough that the NAPA store in Ely, NV had it on the shelf. I was SHOCKED to say the least, I expected to have to order it and wait for a couple of days for it to arrive.

Yup..mine blew in the middle of an intersection 60 miles away, making a u-turn for a Slurpee run for the daughter...since then, I've managed to keep the end fittings to compare with for a braided line to be made.
it's something on the menu for when my truck goes under the knife early next week..(have a new spare in parts bern though, lol)
Add a cheap set of bellowed uppipes while you have the turbo off.
And may as well rebuild the turbo with Clay’s billet 4/4 wheel or the KC Balanced assembly since it’s off.
Be mindful of the HPOP hoses. I had a failure on test drive of dad’s truck after doing some turbo work for him. I assume wrestling the turbo around inside the valley flexed the hose a bit and pushed his already high mileage weak hose over the edge. That was fun.
Done a lot more turbo work in my valley without issue (so far, knock on wood). So just wanted to share the warning.

From what I’ve read the aftermarket hoses are much more likely to fail. So this may be why NAPA has them in stock.

Happen to have a part number for that hose? I’ll be in there this spring, need to get one ahead of that.
Thx
Thanks for the pic highlights, I will be working on that tomorrow, I appreciate the insight.
kwikkordead,
Thats a good point, now I'm looking for braided steel hoses for the power steering system.
RacinJasonWV,
I agree, however I blew the turbo about a year ago and had the shop take care of the bellowed up pipes at that time.
all,
I’ve had this truck since 2015, so far its seen allot of updates.
Entire front end with XRF components (ball joints, tie rods, etc), both front hubs, new water pump, alternator, ac compressor, coolant tank res, turbo, bellowed up pipes, two steering boxes, all glow plugs (motorcraft), plus the normal wear items like brakes, shocks, etc.
I also had a thread a while back where I stripped the interior, reupholstered the whole thing and rebuilt the dash to accommodate an ipad. (Redoing it again now that car play is a thing)
I always forget to take pictures and post things but I read allot and have been on this forum since 2010. Have learned allot and see allot of great examples from everyone over the years.

What actually failed on the power steering hose was the fitting right at the pump. It's a two piece affair that is held together with an internal c-clip type assembly. The c-clip, after twenty years of service, finally wore out to the point where it could not hold the pipe inside the fitting any more and the two pieces separated. I spent a day trying to repair that fitting before finally giving up and going to the local NAPA outlet with the intent of ordering a new hose and waiting for it to arrive. If I had just gone to the parts store in the first place, I would have saved a day, but that's beside the point of this essay. What I'm trying to say is the hose was still clean and dry after twenty years. Just the fitting failed due to a worn out c-clip. Get the SS braided hose if you want, but IMO it's not necessary.
And, again, the hose that I bought from NAPA was $10.00 more than the "aftermarket" hoses available in so many places, but if you laid one next to the old one, I would have been fooled into thinking I bought it straight from Ford. Completely identical in design.
You call that a rabbit hole? I say pull the engine out and rebuild it completely.
Seriously though, there is an entry in the Tech Folder that tells you how to build your own braided power steering hose. Be sure to cover it in sleeve or the braid will wear through anything it touches.
Also, inspect all your engine harness connectors and replace the pigtails if any of them look tired.
This is the link to the custom power steering hose. Note that it replaces the ridiculous factory swivel fitting with an adapter that allows you to use AN fittings on the hose. It is a much more elegant solution altogether. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post19084158
