Had the prosecutor's office persued the death penalty Ridgway would have insisted on a trial. No trial, no matter how good the prosectution's case, has a guaranteed result.
And in it's current form the death penalty is pointless. It's likely that Ridgway would have been in prison for 15 - 25 years before his excecution. What's the point in that, justice delayed is justice denied.
Again, imho, the death penalty in it's current form is pointless.
