Need help with 98 F150 getting started after 5 years
I have a 1998 Ford F150 4x4 XLT i bought from a friend about 4-5 years ago. I was told it had broke the timing chain and needed a new engine. So I parked it and forgot about it. Well, since i had some down time over the holidays I decided to start working on it. I bought a new used engine out of a low mileage expedition and proceeded to start to take the engine out. Once I found what a PITA it would be I figured, "lets just make sure that the timing chain broke". Once i took the timing cover off I discovered that the timing chain guide just fell apart and lodged between the timing chain and oil pan cover and was preventing from turning over. So I ordered a timing chain kit and the fun ensued. Installed new timing chain, new idler pullet and tensioner, new belt. Obviously it needed a new battery. Well, i hooked it up and the horn was honking and lights were flashing. Got on here and figured out how to turn that off. I DO NOT have the factory remote fob, but I went ahead and ordered it. IT also has a aftermarket alarm . That explained why it would not turn over. Set alarm in valet mode (do not have the alarm fob either) and it strarted cranking. Problem is, I cannot hear the fuel pump coming on for the 2-3 second interval, or during cranking. I checked all fuses are good, swapped relays, still nothing. Checked inertia switch, its pushed in. Still no fuel. My check engine light is lighting up with KOEO (key on engine off). so the PCM is getting power.
I didnt think the RAP module cut power to the fuel pump it just interrupted started. Am I wrong?
The aftermarket alarm only interrupted starter not fuel pump and it is in valet mode.
Please help, i am so tired of working on this thing.
Thanks Guys, John
I also posted this over in the fordF150 forum aswell
The 4.6 and 5.4 are both interference engines
When you saw the broken chain guide and the locked up motor
You might (would have) had better luck ordering the new motor
You are most likely in for a teardown and rebuild of the heads on yours before it will have enough compression to run
Usually it just bends all the exhaust valves
If you replace them and the head gaskets it should run
Sounds like you need a fuel pump too
Once you have 40 more hours into it removing the heads and replacing the bent valves
Then you can say you are tired of working on it
Well why not test for power at fuel pump connector? If it's being commanded but not working, then likely pump is bad.
I agree the engine probably has bigger problems. I'm not even sure a guide could stop crank rotation? They're not that strong. I guess if it were wedged just right the starter couldn't overcome it.....?
And yeah -- at the very least---- if you found that much carnage behind timing cover I can guarantee there's a kegger, rave and mosh pit partying in the oil pan right now. If you can get it to fire, shut it off immediately and drop the pan to clean it and the oil pump p/u
