The engine in my truck came out of an ambulance... just found that out this week. I am pretty sure the fuel pump is set low. The PO did install new heads with delphi injectors just 1200 miles before I bought the pickup. He is also the one that swapped in the ambulance 7.3. He said he never had the timing checked and I want to have it done just for peace of mind and my truck seems a little low on power for all the new parts it has. I am turning up the pump just as soon as I can get my hands on a probe for pyro I salvaged out of a semi today.
So my question... turn up the pump first and then take it in for a timing check or get it timed and then start turning up the pump?
I would time it first. It's pretty easy to do if you have access to the tools. You can time it by ear if you don't, but you probably need to hear one timed correctly first to use the ear method. If it is out of time you will make better power and have lower EGT once you time it.
The PO of my truck had Les Schwab replace the IP, and they never dynamically timed it. When I checked it with a timing light it was at 2 degrees BTDC. Setting it at 9 degrees BTDC gave me more power, less smoke, and lower EGT.
It helped the mileage enough to pay for the timing light and diesel pulse sensor in a year.
Yes the pulse sensors are very expensive. I paid $300 for my Bluepoint unit new, but it does work with a standard induction timing light. A digital timing light with RPM display makes it a one man job. I'm into my setup like $400 (don't tell my wife). A cheaper route is to look for something used on ebay. the factory Ford units seem to go for about $100 - $200 used. I've seen used diesel pulse sensors on ebay, too.
When I bought my setup I was not willing to wait for a used rig to become available.
I think a call to our local diesel shop and see what they charge to check it for me is in order. But Bluepoint you say.... I will check price next week when my snap on guy comes buy... might just have to put one on my account and not tell my wife either lol.
my truck has 230,000 on it do i need to have it timed before i turn its fuel up and ya im gettin a pyro to here is a link to a good gauge set up same one im gettin Ford Super Duty F250/F350 Autometer 3 Gauge Package check them out really not a bad price
well it runs like a top and doesent smoke at all i am gunna turn pump up tho cause it wont make any black so i think it might help a little on power if i turned it up
I'd guess it came out of the same factory in China the Bluepoint unit did. I know my unit does not feel like $300. My $100 Innova timing light feels much more expensive.
