I started my 02' crewcab 4x4 PS this morning. As I was ouside by the truck listening to the gorgeous rumble emmitting from my tail pipe (no muffler). The noised changed to a howlling gust of wind coming directly out of the pipe. It was almost like a jet engine preparing for take off. (real loud) clean smoke. I jumped in and drove away not wanting to look back. But I finaly did and everthing was normal (to me) This happens on cold starts/cold idol.
What could that be ?
How do I check to make sure my turbo is working properly. Dont seem to hear it wind up much.
Are you sure it wasn't the EBV closing for warm up? I have the same sound every cold morning at start up. It goes into high idle and stays there till the thermostat is satisfied or I touch the accellorator or brake pedals.
I dont know I am new to the power stroke. I presume this is some sorte of an exhaust valve which traps warm exhaust until it is warmed up. How long does the noise last/how do I tell if mine is working right?
Your presumption is correct. The noise it makes tells you it's working, it will kick off (most of the time) when you step on the brake to put it in gear. Sometimes it will stay a little closed, a quick jab of the throttle will open it up in that case.
If it is trapping exhaust does it still get louder than the normal exhaust sound when at an idle. Like I said before it sounds like a jet engine. Also I am not hearing the turbo wind up like I do in other trucks. I do not have a muffler. Just straight pipe. Should I put a muffler back on it?
Yes, like a jet. That is the usual analogy. Though as a jet engine mechanic I really don't consider it to be accurate.
Do you still have your stock intake? It does quite a good job of muffling the sound of the turbo, or perhaps you are just not used to the sound from inside the cab.
Thanks for your input Cookie88. I have only had my truck for 4 days and I dont know alot about it. But I am learning Could use anything you have for input. Such as how to tell what is stock and what is not.. thanks again for you input
Do a search on Exhaust Brake in this forum and it should bring up multiple threads on the DIY Exhaust brake. Or you can go the distance and pick up an assembled Exhaust brake from a manufacturer. I went that route with no regrets because I got more than just an exhaust brake with it.
