I'm currently building a 1992 F-150 with the 300 I-6. I have a couple of other gauge clusters from 302 trucks that have tachometers in them. Can I use the V-8 cluster in the 300 dash so I have a tach, or are they specific for 6 or 8 cylinder engines?
I have a spare cluster out of another '92, so got that one covered. It does sound like there is a ground wire to disconnect.Looks to be 398 Black/Yellow?
The chassis wiring harness provides the ground or removes based on the engine installed at the factory. You are correct the wire in question is circuit 398 and should be a Black/Yellow wire. That circuit changes color to a black wire at C101. On your factory 6 cylinder truck that wire is most likely missing on one side, engine I would bet, of C101.

Thanks for the info so far.
92 to a 92 tach cluster is a plug and play deal. The wire harness under the hood is what sets the 6 or 8 cylinder on the tach. I would swap out the speedometer assy to keep your mileage and PSOM ratios
