Transmission problems

My transmission will not go into drive. Reverse works fine, second and low do also.
the truck is a 72' F250, 390.
Any ideas of where to start first?

Are you using a stock or an aftermaket shifter??

I am not sure if your tranny has a vacuum modulator but it may be bad and is usually easy to change. It mounts on the outside of the tranny. Check first and make sure it is getting vacuum to it. Some trannys can be forced to make the shift by shifting it manually from 2 to 3. You will have to over run it quite a bit, like up to 60 or so then move your shifter from 2 to 3 while backing off the accelerator and see if it shifts then. If it does then you probably need a modulator. Be sure and take your old one with you to the parts store because the have a plethora of different color codes and they will need to know which one you have. The test I mentioned is not absolute. I have seen instances where it was a bad modulator and still couldn't be forced to make the shift.
