I needed a cheap truck, found a decent condition 2008 F150 4.6 2wd 180k miles at auction with hail damage and bought it for cheap! I've put about 4000k miles on it. When the transmission is cold I put it in drive and theirs no issues. but once the transmission is up to temp and I shift into reverse or park, and then back in the drive it feels like its in neutral until the the rpm reaches 1800 and it slams into gear! For the last few months I just put in low when starting out and once im moving shift into drive and everything good to go, Theirs no issues once the truck is in drive! I replaced the fluid and filter, and the fluid is full! Called a small transmission shop the other day and talked to the guy he said its more than likely a week fluid pump. It looks fairly easy to replace, just pulling transmission, any other ideas?
First, how long did it take you to put 4 million miles on this truck? It's probably worn out with 4,000,000 miles. (k means 1,000, so 4000k miles = 4,000,000 miles. )
Before changing parts I recommend some diagnoses. Get a 0-350 PSI gauge with a 1/8" NPT thread. Install it in the test port on the transmission. The test port is on the driver's side of the trans, towards the front of the trans, just above the pan. It has a black hex head plug from the factory.
Once the gauge is installed warm up the trans and check pressures at idle in every position (PRND21.) Then check pressure at stall in RD21. Stall is when you press the brake pedal HARD with your left foot, and put the accelerator on the floor with your right foot. NOTE: DO NOT HOLD STALL FOR MORE THAN 5 (FIVE) SECONDS AT A TIME!!!!!! IDLE OR FAST IDLE IN PARK OR NEUTRAL FOR AT LEAST 30 SECONDS BETWEEN STALL TESTS. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THIS WARNING WILL DESTROY YOUR TORQUE CONVERTER.
