My machanic told me to put a high vol pump in, even though I am putting in a crank kit (new main and rod bearings). He said the extra volume wont hurt.
Then I heard that a high vol and new bearings will cause seals to fail.
There is no correlation between a high volume pump and bearing failure in a new engine. Sounds like an old wives tale to me. If your clearances are correct and everything assembled correctly you should have nothing to worry about. A high volume pump is deeper (longer gears) than a stock pump, so it can pump more oil per revolution to your engine.
The only thing I've ever heard is if you get a high pressure/high volume pump that puts out somewhere over 100 psi then it "could" possibly blow out a seal. But I doubt if it is properly installaled if even then you would have an issue on a new engine. I've only heard that on older engines with suspect seals to begin with then you might get oil leaks, but a high volume pump alone will not cause any problems. Just be able to pump more oil to your engine.
The only thing I would add is to be careful with a high volume pump & stock pan. I have an 8 qt. Pan on mine & put 4 quarts of oil in it & primed it with a drill on the engine stand & I could pump enough oil to empty the pan. It wouldn't empty with 5 qts but that is to close for me. Just my experience for what it is worth. Later, Jay
