Does anyone have any hints for replacing the crossover tube that runs between the exhaust manifolds (I think it's the manifolds) on a '93 302? It's the tube that runs across the back of the engine with the threaded fitting for some kind of checkvalve about midway along it.
First my checkvalve separated where the threaded connection meets the body of the valve. Then when I tried to free the connector from the tube, I managed to break the tube in half instead of get the connector off. I got the tube off of the driver's side without any difficulty, but the passenger side is another matter entirely. Not much room, and a stuck nut are driving me up the wall. And the whole time, my truck sounds like a chevy!
Sooo, if anyone has any words of encouragement, secret bolt loosening tricks for bolts in places you can't see, or magic tools to reccomend, I'd be forever grateful.
I had to pull the upper intake off of mine to get at it. The valve you need to replace is called a check valve for the Thermactor system (there are 2 of them...one goes to the cat tube).
I just used a closed end 1/2 wrench that had an angle to it. I had to use a pipe on the end to give me leverage...I don't think I could have done it with the upper intake on it though.
Thanks for the tips. If it comes to pulling the motor to get to it, I'm going for the vise grips! Actually, the thought of pulling the upper intake scares me a bit, too. I guess I need to look at what's involved and see if it's something I want to tackle. Wish me luck.
pulling the upper intake is simple. I thought the same when i had the same problem you are now. its 5 bolts and one torx bolt that sits in the middle. You will need a size 40 torx to get that bolt out. you can leave the throttle body on the intake to. just unbolt the egr and intake hoses and thats it. pretty easy.
Yep, I used to think it was a big deal too, but after doing it about 5 times in a year, it's like second nature. Just a few bolts/torx and hoses and you are done...gaskets are fairly cheap too.
