Anyone know ratings for a 1977 Merc. 460. I will be rebuilding the engine before it goes in my truck. 137K original miles on engine. Runs very quiet and no smoke. Any ideas would be helpful. "Rebuild specs." I was thinking... 4x4 cam, alum. intake, L&L headers, mild head work, comp. 9 - 9.5, this isn't my only ride but I would like it to be healthy... truck will be used for a little towing, mainly playing in 4wd whenever I get the chance.
Sorry so long... Thanks, Dan
OK lets try this. Will the 460 with around 400 hp be easy to do and keep it streetable? Any specs. , dyno numbers, to help me get to my goal. Specific parts please if you don't mind. Engine will be at machine shop within a couple of weeks. Looking for combo's that already are working. Thanks, Dan
George, If you don't mind could you please educate me on the early timing gear assembly. I mentioned that to a local machine shop awhile ago but they said it wouldn't make any differance. I didn't believe them. It sounds like you have been there and done that. How can I find out how far to take this engine so it will still run on pump gas? This will be going in a 1987 F-250 with a C-6, 4x4. There is about a half dozen machine shops in the area. What would be the correct things to ask them to know if they are the right place to build my engine? Thanks so much, sorry so long, Dan
'72 and later 429/460s use a timing gear assembly that retards the timing 4° for emissions purposes. '68-71 are straight up. EFI engines are also straight up. I'd stay at 9.5:1 c/r to use pump gas.
Finding a reliable machine shop can be difficult. A majority do cranks/heads/blocks for the garage trade and little performance work. Try and find one that builds for the local circle track racers is your best bet. You generally have to tell them exactly what you want done to your block and heads.
