I have a 2001 Super crew 5.4L 2wd. The slip yoke looks like it has a harmonic balancer on it. At about 2500 RPM and up it makes the truck shutter. I’ve already jacked the rear end up and ran it with the wheels off the ground and you can watch when it starts bouncing around.
My question is, can I pull that off the yoke and just have the drive shaft rebalanced and be good? Or has anyone found any type of replacement yoke?
The only thing I can find says it is for the 4.6L only.
Before you go too far into pulling the shaft
Set the truck on the ground in neutral and blocked, get under the truck and move all joints in every direction with significant force. Make sure it is not any of the joints or connections. It may be the shaft, joints, or even the pinion.
If you do decide to pull the shaft do not just balance it but have it rebuilt then balanced. Just make sure you have a good reputable drive shaft shop do the work.
I would consider changing the rear seal while it is off the truck as well.
I did do that also. All the U joints are solid and there is no play at all down the drive line. Just that pice on the yoke that reminds me of a harmonic balancer.
Is that ring lose? It's not supposed to be. If it is then the driveshaft balance is way out to lunch, a driveshaft balance shop will want to replace the whole yoke with a new one before balancing.
