Not sure the title does my question justice so I'll do my best at explaining what I think I am hearing. I've had my 2017 PSD for a few weeks now. Getting to know it quite well as I've put some decent milage on it. Truck starts easy every time.. However after its started I get a sound that resembles the starter still spinning. Is this normal on these trucks? This isn't a grinding noise, but strongly resembles a start that is spinning and not making contact. I did a search and the only thing that comes up is starting grinding issue.
I am wondering if I am just not used to it and its caught me off guard.
The computer cuts power to the starter once it detects the engine has started. So, no. The starter does not spin. What might be happening is the starter drive, or what is called the Bendix, can hang on the flywheel due to a burr or obstruction on the Bendix and the engine can spin the starter as the engine is running. This kind of failure does happen. My son has a Ford Flex that does this. Not always, but occasionally. The hang lasts for a second or two. What you might do is raise the hood, get yourself a piece of garden hose and put it on the starter. Have someone start the truck and see if that sound is really coming from the starter.
Thanks for the feedback. I will give it a look when I get home. I might even try and record the sound. It is certianly noticable. Assuming this is the culprit would that mean a new starter is in order? 76k on the truck.
my 2021 has sounded like this since I purchased it. My family agrees it sounds like it is over cranking itself. I assume it's just the sound they make.
I couldn't pin point anything other than the starter making the sound after getting home last night. I had a diesel mechanic stand next to it while I started it and he said it was the high torque starter and to not worry. Just a spinning buzz sound that lasts a second or less after the engine starts.
