Starter Problem?

Hey guys and gals, I'm new to the forum and have a quick question. I drive a 97 Ranger, 4cyl, 5 speed, w/ about 120k mileage on it. This morning when i started it, after cranking and starting there was a very brief grinding noise under the hood. Since then everytime I start the car this noise is duplicated. I spoke to another ranger owner and he said that my starter could be going out? Lord only knows, anyways if anyone has any information that could help me I sure would appreciate it!!

Welcome to FTE!!

The first thing that comes to my mind is the starter hanging engaged after the engine starts. Can you describe the noise more?

Yeah grinding is indictive of the starter being engaged after the vehicle has started. If you've ever accidentally tried to start a vehicle that was already started you know what I mean.

I had the same symptoms with our shop truck at work. I told the foreman the starter was going. Him and the apprentice looked at it, and they both agreed it WASN'T the starter. morons. I get back to work the next week, and find out they replaced the starter on my day off.

So yeah. It's probably hanging up. Get ready to replace it.
