I was doing some research on replacing my fuel filter and noticed the cat 1r-0751 has the same thread pitch and size as the regular 6.9 idi. does the height matter? has anyone tried this before? any help much appreciated, thanks.
If your 6.9 has the single filter like a 7.3 does, it must be a water separator as well. This Cat filter isn't a water separator.
I've always wanted to try the one piece filters like the 33617, but I've never had a problem with the two piece factory setup. The problem is more so people not changing their filters at decent intervals, and not draining the water separator regularly. We've only ever had Motorcraft fuel filters on my truck, and there's never been a problem. Motorcraft and Wix seems to be the best/most popular, with the odd guy running a Baldwin. Cat filters are pricey, save your money and spend it elsewhere on your truck

The height matters in that if the filter is much talker you may need to raise the filter head up from its factory position so it clears the valve cover below.
No built-in water separator on the 6.9 filter tho, so physical fitment is your only concern there. Factory 6.9 filters are 6 microns iirc, so this Cat being finer it should have no negative effect on the IP.
Here's a curve ball for the 7.3 owners - your factory filter with the built-in water separator is supposedly 10 microns (some aftermarket ones going as high as 15 microns even). But you can easily run a 2-stage filtration system by using an Econoline 6.9 van filter tower - it sits on the driver's side of the engine on top of the lower intake between the A/C compressor and the air box ducting, if you get the steel line that goes with it you can tie it into your IP super-easy, then all you gotta do is connect the outlet of the 7.3 truck filter head to the 6.9 van filter tower's inlet (you can do this in a number of different ways) and Bob's your uncle. You get water separator, a 10-micron primary filter, and a finer secondary filter in one complete package.

what if we are running a facet electric pump before the factory one. it has a clear prefilter bowl on it so it should collect water in there so we can see it so then a water seperator should not be an issue if we wanted to go to the 2 micron Cat filter....will the cat filter fit on an 7.3 idi water sep configuration (its ok if it eliminates the water sep because the facet should take care of that)?

That's actually not a proper water separator if I remember right, just a transparent bowl to show you the crap the stainless mesh is stopping and when it's time to drop and clean. Do verify with the manufacturer that it is intended to be used as a water separator before relying on it completely.
The Cat filter designed to fit 6.9 filter heads cannot be used to replace the factory 2-piece 7.3 assembly as the filter heads have different threads - memory is a but fuzzy but I think it was 7/8-something for the 6.9 filter and 1-something for the 7.3 one with the separator. There are other filters that will do what you want, I'm sure Cat offers one too, it's just not this exact one.
