Happy New Year all, I wish you warm garages the next couple of months and plenty of open roads thereafter to enjoy your vehicles.
I am replacing the clutch and resurfacing the flywheel. I need to replace the starter ring on my 226 flywheel, It is 114 teeth. I can't seem to locate one through vendors. Seems like V-8 rings might be available or rings with112 teeth.
Anyone have experience in replacing the 226 114 teeth starter ring? If one has to use a different ring would that mean replacing the gear on the motor to fit the ring? Is that a/the solution?
Thanks as always for the continued collective wisdom.
Thanks JB,
looks like Mid Fifty has a 112 ring, not certain if it’s for eight cylinder motor and if that makes a difference?
I’m hoping they can provide the correct starter gear if I have to use a 112 ring.
I’ll keep monitoring EBay, if anyone has one or knows of one please let me know.
Thanks
My late uncle by marriage used to tell how hard parts were to get during the 2nd WW. He used to mark where the worn gear’s teeth were on the flywheel then remove the gear and flip it locating the bad teeth in a different location on the flywheel.
Knowing my uncle for the scoundrel he was I am pretty sure he continued that “fix” when the parts were available!
Kenny,
Great story, your uncle was part of the “Great Generation” who did incredible things and accomplished so much with so little in challenging times.
They are a model for all of us. And how very clever your uncle was.
I’m hoping I can find a replacement or I may try your uncles trick!
That's actually a very good option. I've done it myself. Ya do what ya gotta do when you need a part you can't find. New is nice but, not always a must.
I saw and now I cannot find a linked thread to this that talked about the number of teeth on the starter motor for a 112 and 114 teeth starter ring.
I cannot recall if someone said 9 teeth was for a 112 or for a 114.
My starter motor has 10 teeth. Is that a match for 114 starter ring?
Not certain where I can find this information.
