2014 F-250 Crew PS Diesel, 30K miles. Purchased new and now the DEF fluid system is acting up. Says the tank isn't full which tells me vehicle will go into reduced speed. Took it to dealership, and they were able to get it reset. Payed them to do a DEF self clean, They ran it 14 times, it only finished one time and threw a code. Told me that the DEF emissions system will need to probably need to be replaced to a tune of $5k+, if they can get the parts. They also recommended that I don't get the truck serviced with the Emission Recall 21E01. States that if it throws codes outside of the recall then I'd be responsible for fixing those failures.
Really at a standstill on what to do with this truck. It's paid off in full. It's a first generation engine, but if I trade it in will I still end up with the failed emission problems on the new models?
CUSTOER STATES DEF FLUID LOW WARNING IS ON. TOPPED OFF FLUID AND SHOWING 411 MILES UNTIL EMPTY THE NEXT DAY. CHECK AND ADVISE.
VISUAL CONFIRM MIL ON. EEC TEST P06EA. OASIS, FSA 15M02. DIAG BY FSA, CONFIRM EGT12 FAULTY, ORDER AND REPLACE SENSOR, CLEAR CODES, START VEHICLE, ROAD TEST, VERIFIED NO DTC'S NOW. NORMAL VEHICLE OPERATION.
NO CHARGE FOR SENSOR REPLACEMENT.
PART B:
CUSTOMER REQUESTED MANUAL DPF REGENERATION PROCEDURE TO VERIFY NO OTHER SYSTEM ISSUES BEFORE TOWING WITH VEHICLE. PERFORMED REGEN PROCEDURE WITH IDS, TEST EXITED WITH 'UNKNOWN FAULT'. RESTART, SAME RESULT. THIRD ATTEMPT, MONITOR DPF DATA DURING REGEN, FOUND EGT12 SPIKING OVER 1,400'F. SUSPECT FAULTY SENSOR, USE KNOWN GOOD SENSOR, RETEST, NO CHANGE. REINSTALLED NEW SENSOR, EEC TEST, NO DTC'S. MONITOR FOURTH REGEN , NOTICED EGT13 SPIKE TO 1388'F AND EGT 13 STARTED TO CLIMB. THIS INDICATES A LARGE AMOUNT OF ACCUMULATED SOOT OR FAULTY DPF ASSY. FINALLY ON 8TH REGEN ATTEMPT THE VEHICLE STARTED REGEN BUT EXITED AS TEMPS RAN TOO HIGH. RECOMMEND FURTHER REGEN AS DPF ASSY IS ON EXTENDED BACKORDER.
Looks like the DEF fix was pretty straight forward. Not unusual. The DPF with high regen temps is a first for me. Will be interested to read other's comments who may have seen this before. Since the temp spiked at both 12 and 13, that would indicate just what the tech wrote on your service receipt. Makes me wonder why the truck wasn't throwing a fault code for an exhaust restriction or regen failure before you took it in.
Maybe you have someone in your area that can do what HRTKD mentioned?
I've had a similar issue a couple of times with my truck not completing a regen. It would start a regen and then stop after a couple of miles because of a faulty EGT sensor the first time and 2 faulty EGT sensors the second time because the defective sensors were falsely reading too high temps. On the second repair to replace the 2 faulty EGT sensors I had them replace the last factory sensor proactively and haven't had this problem since.
Also on the DEF pump Ford extended the warranty I thought like 5 additional years/200k miles so that needs to be asked to the Ford dealer.
Keep in mind that the DEF hgeater is going to go out if it hasn't been replaced already. Get a Oasis report from the dealer that will tell you if repairs were made from Ford dealer. The updae gives you some fixes and some parts are covered under Ford's extended warranty on this. Not sure why they told you not to do the update. There is a thread here that explained it.

I know we’ve had a few members report faults after the update that the dealerships said weren’t covered. So I suspect with the OP’s dealership saying the same thing it may indicate that problem is more prolific. That’s one reason I’ve held off on having it done.
I've owned the truck for five+ years ... but has only 29,534 miles. I did ask them about warranty, but the dealership told me the vehicle didn't qualify.
IMO ... I should be qualified under the 7/70,000mile Long Term Warranty for California requirements for emissions warranties

I'm also reluctant to have the Emission Recall 21E01 procedure done as well. It stinks how the recall is written. Take your vehicle in to be upgraded and walk out several thousand dollars less in your pocket and if you don't pay the truck only runs at reduced speed.

They have an obligation to explain why your truck doesn't meet warranty criteria. Not just say it doesn't, but why. If you have the written warranty and you qualify by the plain language, then they need to have an argument. I know there are some exclusions. Sometimes people misunderstand so this will be a learning experience for someone.

This is what Fords response to the warranty:
As you can see your vehicle which is a 6.7L 4V V8 T/C Diesel is not specified under the California Emissions Defect* section of this NEW VEHICLE WARRANTY COVERAGES FOR 2014 VEHICLES Table of Context. Therefore, you vehicle would not be covered under the California Emissions Warranty.
