Hello everyone. Nice looking forum you have. I found it while searching for a problem. I just wanted a truck to haul occasional items and I wanted the old body style. Found a 94 xlt 2 wheel drive with 90000 miles and pretty decent for age and price. Fixed a few items already but kind of stumped on one problem. It stinks somewhere between hot garbage and port o potty stink. Got worse when running hvac. I should’ve known when I saw bunch of air fresheners lol. I can make it go away briefly by spraying some air freshener in intake outside below windshield. It’s been hard to search solutions. Has anyone run into this?
The hvac system gets fresh air from the grill area in front of the windshield (aka, cowl). Its open to anything that wants to make a home in it like insects. Also, pine needles and other vegetation often falls in there and gets stuck. Im guessing you have a science project growing underneith your cowl. You can take off a few screws from inside the engine comparment and take off your wipers to clean out the cowl. If you dont find a bunch of slime in there, than it the smell is probably in your hvac system, which is alittle harder to clean out.
But the pee smell remains a loooong time. Had that happen in a 2 ton IH truck we used in the winter. Smell would almost run you out of the cab.
When rebuilding my brick years ago I swapped in a dash that was in better condition. Was gonna keep it intact with the air ducting and all, till I smelled mouse pee in the upper vents. Donor truck hadn't been used in a long while, and there were no traces of mice actually living up there, still all the ducting got tossed away and the one from my old dash moved over to the new one. And while the fenders were off, a sheet of razor-sharp expanded steel mesh was installed in the fresh air intake to hopefully stop the little effers from ever getting in there again.
got carpet? Is your truck leaking at the center of the windshield at the top? Mine was, vinyl floor but it made it humid and it made the seat eventually soak it up and be damp. I ran a heater in there and used ozone generator. Sprayed seat with a water shed thing and sealed the windshield, back window leaks. nice and good now.
