Have a 04 F250 with the 5.4L FX4 and tow/plow package. Not sure what size the stock alt. is. Was told to run a heavy batt. cable from the alt to the batt because of how much power is used while plowing. That the stock wire does not let engough flow back to the batt fast engoungh, is this true? I was searching this but only found info on the diesels and 2 batts. I have the 5.4 and 1 batt. If need be I will upgrade the alt if it is not big enough for what I need. Lights go out some tines when liftinhg the plow, they are LED. Thanks for any info
I think the factory alternator on the 2004 5.4L was 110 amps.
Wire size is important, but so is battery capacity. If you're suddenly placing a large load on the electrical system the power comes primarily from the battery. Adding a second battery or a larger battery (or both) would give extra power capacity to fulfill the sudden large demands.
What brand makes the largest CCA non AGM battery?
'Know a guy that said use a marine deep cycle/start batt. Stll looking to upgrade the cables if it will help at all.
I did Jacks upgrade for my 6.0 since I installed a 190 amp alt and to balance the drain on the batteries. If you keep yur stock size alternator, then yur existing wiring should be fine. If you go bigger Jack recommended:
140a
Ideal * 8ga -15" 1/4" eyelet to 5/16" eyelet, alternator to a battery mounted fuse block of 150a * 8ga - 3" 1/4" eyelet to 5/16" eyelet, alternator to a battery mounted fuse block of 150a * Bussmann HMEG Fuse Block Holder (Or your choosing) * Bussmann AMG 150 Fuse (Or your choosing) (Go to 230a level if you think you will ever increase alternator size over 140a)
230a
* 4ga -15" 1/4" eyelet to 5/16" eyelet, alternator to a battery mounted fuse block of 250a * 4ga - 3" 1/4" eyelet to 5/16" eyelet, alternator to a battery mounted fuse block of 250a * Bussmann HMEG Fuse Block Holder (Or your choosing) * Bussmann AMG 250 Fuse (Or your choosing)
I ended up using a 2ga marine cable since my length was a little longer than Jack's. Yur eyelet sizes and cable lengths may be different than ours. You need to clean all your grounding locations due to the age of yur truck. Here r his utubes if u have not seen them.
