02 f250 2wd 4r100. 143k miles. Transmission shifts kind of weird particularly during the 2-3 shift. Described best as a shudder or like a fast double bump. Only under light-mild throttle. WOT it shifts absolutely perfect. It doesn't do this a lot but enough once in a blue moon For me to take notice. It actually shifts decently most of the time. Noticed this at 136k and serviced the fluid and filter with Motorcraft parts and fluid (mercon v). There was the usual fuzz on the magnet but also some black pepper like flakes in the pan. The shifting did improve but every once in a while it will do the shudder thing. 1-2 is fine. 3-4 and lock up are perfect. Just the 2-3 shift. Temps are fine. There wasn't a bobber In the pan so I assume it's at least been serviced before. What is a general consensus on this?
There wasn't a bobber in the pan because the bobber is not used on the 4R100.
Sometimes the converter can lock right after the 2-3 shift. Maybe that is what you're feeling?
could be. It's definitely not a slip. It did it real good on my way home from work a few minutes ago going up hill about 1/4 or a little more throttle. Shifted as followed
1-2 flawless
2 bump bump 3rd
3-4 flawless
4th to lock up flawless.
I've been reading through multiple threads anywhere I could find but nothing seems close to my specific issue. Is it possible that I have trash around the 2-3 shift valve, the associated accumulater, or the direct drive clutch?
Not the shift valve, but possibly the accumulator. If it were the shift valve the shift wouldn't happen.
gotcha. Its definitely kind of hard to describe. Like it's in 2nd gear, rpms rising to the 3rd gear shift point, bump then bumps into third, happens very fast, not drawn out . Rpm doesn't rise sharply or flair like it would in a bad slip ive experienced before.
ideally I want to replace a potential accumulator or something I can get to from dropping the pan if it's infact the issue. I hate throwing parts to solve problems.
I've read threads where guys say this crappy shift quality is a like it or love kind of personality with 4r100s. I've had e4ods but this is my first non obs f250.
My 4R100 doesn't do that. Neither has any of the many other 4R100s I've driven over the years.
If a trans I'm driving doesn't shift right you can bet that I will notice it. It was my job for many years at Ford to rate shifts. I still can't stop doing that even though I left Ford almost 15 years ago.
First im not a believer of a fix in a can,,
But I had basically the same issue with my 4r100 in a truck I owned a few years ago.
Long story short I added a bottle lucas transmission additive to it and problem went away.
Drove the truck a few more months and sold it but Trans was.working fine when I sold it
So I just got my truck back from the dealership the other day. I hook up my plow and start plowing my driveway. Through out the time of plowing my truck started loosing power to the wheels. I eventually had the throttle to the floor and my trans was starting to get hot but not overly hot. I had some smoke I could see in the light from my head lights. Any ways I let the trans cool off and went back out later on. I got maybe 1/4 to 1/2 a mile when my truck no longer would move at all in any gear, not 2wd, 4wd high nor 4wd low.
well last night I went back out and tried to see if it might move with a cold transmission. I got 6 inches of movement in reverse 2wd. All other gears and ranges just free rev.
Little update for everyone and anyone who may come to this savior of the forum.
A seemingly unrelated thing I believe solved my problem. My intake has been leaking coolant for a past few months at the crossover on the passenger side. Well I was driving it the other day and noticed that my exhaust note sounded off. Not a definite miss but for sure something was off. Remembering threads about that same issue with the intake causing the #1 plug well to fill with coolant, I pulled the coil and low and behold there was moisture on the contact in the coil, inside the boot and on the plug. Replaced the plug with an ngk I had in my stash, a new boot and spring and a coil off my gt mustang. It always idled good, infact better than my 09 f150 does. Always decent power. But doing that instantly made it even better.
and above all the shifts are buttery smooth now. I can't even feel it shift gears now. That's about 2 days of driving it and paying attention to it closely after R&I of the COP and plug.
Will update with any further developments. This forum has saved me much trouble. I'd like to help out future readers if I can.
