Pretty sure I broke another 9" differential. It's acting like it has a spool in it. The original diff I broke the spiders, and I think I did it again. Anyone around San Diego withj a 3.89 9" they want to part with?
Usually, the weak point of the stock 28 spline rear is the axle. But if you have a 2-pinion open rear it is probably a tossup between those gears and the axles. I was going to build up a differential myself until I discovered I could buy a 4-pinion trac-loc already built for only a few dollars more. The stock 28 spline 4-pinion trac-loc can handle around 400 HP.
Thunder, you won't really know what's going on with it until you get the pumpkin out. From what you're describing, it could have just locked up. The way 9" carriers are, sometimes they don't get enough oil inside and the side gear galls and locks up in the carrier. Sorta like a spun bearing.
Back in the day, I use to do a lot of gear set ups for drag racers and street racers in my area. Sometimes I'd build a "Po' Boys Posi" by shimming up the side gears so tight it would act dang near like a spool. Some of those locked up. Nobody cared. At that time you could get a standard diff for near nuthin'!
I busted up a bunch of spider gears and axle gears. Found a lot of the problem was my 2 feet. Ate the splines off bunch of axles till figured out wasnt enough oil in case. So jacked up side fill plug is on and filled till ran out, put plug back in let down, ya its over full but stopped eating splines .
lizardman, cropduster, I would love to upgrade, but it's not in the cards ATM. Christmas and such.
2Dwoods, it ACTS like a spool.
Mikey, I have broken a few diffs in my day, and rebuilt a bunch that someone else broke, sure feels like a broken spider, but...
5starmind, I'm going to give that a shot.
Otherwise, I need a used 9" till finances improve.
Thanks guys, Dan TK65

I blame that heavy right foot and your clutch pedal! lol
Sorry to hear it's down again. You make it all the way up I-5 and I'd cut you a deal on my old drop out with 4.10s.
Exactly how are you breaking them? If using the same housing, is it possible something is causing the trouble? (Slightly bent tube etc). Reports state the 9” takes a lot of punishment!
I want to know how you broke two diffs. Is there a good story?
Well... The first one, I was in a fairly heated argument with my better half and decided that leaving the premises would be prudent to avoid escalation sop nOn the way out I showed my displeasure with the situation with my right foot and the roar of a big block. I dumped the clutch and nailed the throttle so hard that the truck felt like it leaped into the air! I was able to keep going but the symptoms were obvious shortly thereafter.
This time there was no drama, no excitement and I'm not sure what happened. After reading the replies, it might be binding and not broken. It has been parked at work during christmas, going to overfill it and go for a spin when I get off in about a half hour.
Made it around the block with only one POP!, I think it might have been letting go from where it was bound. About to head home, 40-mile round trip to get back to work tomorrow. Fingers crossed.
