92 van transmission troubles

I have a 1992 ford van e 150 5 liter AOD transmission . It want go out of second gear and sometimes it roars when starting from a stop. So I'm pretty sure it shot, wondering if you can replace it with a C6 transmission or do I have to go back with the AOD ? I don't think its worth paying to have it rebuild 2 to $5000.00 dollars, so should I try and find one at a savage yard for 200.00 dollars. Also, I've never pulled a automatic trans, I've pulled a few manuals, so how messy or hard is it to pull one ? Thanks f1butcher

I'd post this in the Transmission sub-forum---should be plenty of good advice found by members there.

Are you sure it has an AOD? What is the trans code on the drivers door pillar? T is for an AOD but W would be the 4R70w computer controlled version and both of these were used in '92.

The doghouse engine cover makes pulling the transmission relatively easy.

Thanks, I saw a 1993 van at salvage yard a couple of weeks ago, but it had a outer blue casing , wondering if it was like a different company trans. and not made by Ford. I need to go back and see if it is an AOD or not by the letter T. It looked like an AOD.

I guy I ran into has a 351 engine and a C4 trans hooked to it for sale. Said the C4 would hook up to my 92 van ok, but I think the C4 would be a little weak for a E150 van ?

U is 4R70W and E is E4OD or 4R100, depending on the year.

Wondering if the 4R70W or the E4OD trans will fit my 92 ford van that has the AOD in it ? I guess it would have to match the bolt pattern and length , plus the cable linkage.

The 4R70W is an updated AOD. It should bolt in. You'll need a computer to run it, though.
