Engine Noise

Good morning and Happy Holidays all! I am looking for some advice on my 2003 5.4l Screw. The motor has 240000 miles on it. For as long as I can remember, the motor has a tick during operation. However, the tick only happens right around 2700 rpm. Once I have the motor below or above 2700, the noise goes away. I have checked all the plugs to make sure they are tight. I am leaning either towards lifters or timing chains, neither of which have been touched. The only thing that throws me off if that the noise is not consistent, other than at 2700 rpm. I also haven't been able to tie the noise to either side of the motor. What are your thoughts? Thanks in advance!

My two suggestions are that you could buy a technician stethoscope fairly cheap at a local parts/tools seller, OR get a reputable technician to use his to give you his diagnosis.

the motor has a tick during operation.
Are you sure it's from the motor ?

Does it occur only while driving or also when parked ?

Thanks for the stethoscope suggestion! I am going to look into that this week.

The noise happens while driving and parked, so definitely something in the motor.

I think the "are you sure it's from inside the motor?" question is valid. Once you have the stethoscope, try the engine as-is at first. Then, remove the fan belt and try it again.

What if it is an accessory bolted to the motor? A couple hundred dollar P/S pump or water pump would be a relief compared to internal motor issue...
