I got the truck from my grandfather with 90k. It was well taken care of. I’ve never seen my egt go over 650, but recently it’s been staying around 1000 & I can fit 1250 easily. Why did it all of a sudden go up? Sometimes it goes back down to 550ish but if i get on it, it goes back to 1000-1200 & stays there for a while just cruising
What brand are the gauges you are using to read EGT?
Where is the EGT probe mounted physically?
Are you running a chip, tuner or anything other than what it came with from Ford?
Have you modified anything else on the truck or engine like turbo, up-pipes, intake, etc?
There are a couple of possibilities you are seeing what you are. Like exhaust/drive pressure leaks, boost leaks, gauge malfunction, sensor malfunction, etc...
I typically wait until the EGT gauge is ~300° before shutting down after working the engine hard towing a 5th wheel. I typically see 700° - 1100° when towing the same 5th wheel.
I don’t know what brand they are, but I can assure you that they were high dollar. My grandfather was a very proud man & would never put something that wasn’t the best on his truck. The turbo is stock, I have a ts 6 position chip in it. Other than that, I don’t know what was done to it. I’ve been told that there was a lot of work done to the truck but I can’t find anything other than a bunch of toggle switches that don’t do anything anymore. Im pretty sure it has stock injectors. Also, would a intercooler help?
Elijahth, I trust that they are high dollar gauges, but anything made or designed by humans can and will fail at some point. I have ISSPRO EV2 gauges, which are considered very high quality and I have had a fuel pressure sensor fail and a microprocessor in an EGT gauge fail.
Sometimes we pay more for good quality and sometimes we pay more for similar quality. It happens.
If your truck is a 2001 (what is in your public profile), you have an intercooler already. If you were referring to an upgraded intercooler, they are very costly for a true upgrade. The 7.3L OEM intercooler actually does a pretty good job and there is no need for a person in your position to swap it out. Not at this time anyway.
Have you checked for boost leaks?
Can you see soot on the up-pipes where the collars are up near the collector?
What tune are you running on the TS6 chip when seeing elevated EGT? For example, is it "daily driver 20 HP" or is it "INSANE 300HP"?
We are eager to help you out sir, we just need more information and for you to do some on site investigating for us.
I need all the help I can get! I’m a learning mechanic & diesels are still very very new to me. I keep it on the 75HP tune & high idle in the mornings. How could I find boost leaks & the things about the collars on the up pipes?
We love pictures. Take a photo of your gauges, and another of the motor, at minimum. If you can take one of the turbo and firewall behind it from the driver's side, post it up, too.
Be nice to know the year of the truck also, nevermind me just criusing along waiting for coffee!
I see now that Sous established it is 2001
and Yes, you already have an intercooler
Did your grandfather put new bellowed up pipes?
I could not find the egt probe. but did manage to get pictures, sorry for the delay Zoom in on the bottom & under pyro you can see my current egt. The truck has only been running for 3 min after sitting for a day
I’m really starting to think something is wrong with the gauge. Because the truck can sit for hours & if I turn the key on, it will say my egt is at 850 or so…
I have inserted a red arrow in the last image you posted above. That is most likely your pyrometer, which is mounted in the down pipe and generally considered not an ideal location. That said, and as we were eluding to above, the gauge or the pyrometer sensor itself are likely faulty. Especially if the gauge is reading 1196° 3 minutes after starting from a cold engine for the first time of the day. Especially in that location within the down pipe.
So I unplugged it & it read 2213 without starting the truck & didn’t move. I plugged it back in & it stayed around 920 & moved around the number, without starting the truck. Also, come to find out, it is a BD Power x monitor
Until you start the truck it should read ambient temps. At idle around 260⁰
in town 430⁰
empty on highway 550-600⁰
Assuming stock tune. I've heard others talk about seeing 1100-1300 when empty on highway in a "hot" tune, but I've never seen those kinda temps empty in my most extreme tunes
