I know many (myself included) have deleted or have decided to not include Active Steering to our builds to try to get our trucks built sooner.
After we eventually get our rides, is it a possibility for us to procure the necessary components and upgrade our trucks ourselves? Does anyone know what changes need to be made to add Active Steering to a truck after it’s built?
Anything can be done, but I believe this has been discussed before and the answer was not easily. The components are all on the back of the steering wheel. Not sure if the wiring is there.

Thanks so much Nickshu! I am still waiting on my truck to get scheduled since I ordered it in October and removed the AS a couple of weeks ago. After I get it and put some miles on it, I’ll think about investigating it further. Merry Christmas! 🎄🎁

I drove a SD both with and without it. I chose not to get it b/c I found a truck at a dealer about an hour away w/ every option I wanted except for adaptive steering so I bought it.
I don't really notice not having it, I mean when parking/driving I never think "I wish I had adaptive steering".
Some have said it can act twitchy on the highway, but I only test drove it in town so did not evaluate that.
Maybe if I had it I would feel differently after living with it day to day. Who knows.
I guess it used to be standard on the upper trim levels but in 2020 they made it optional on all models.

I have yet to see anyone add it after built. Not sure if it's because of whats involved, or if it's the combination of trouble and expense.
A properly functioning Adaptive steering system does not make the steering twitchy on the highway, actually the opposite is true. I had not given the option any consideration when I was truck shopping but ended up finding my current truck on the lot with every option I wanted, none that I didn't want with the exception of it having AS. I don't regret it, actually nice to have.
Would I add it after the fact, probably not. Even if it is possible the cost wouldn't be worth it to me.
The steering wheel with the Adaptive Steering is a spendy thing. I mistakenly ordered my 21 without the Heated Steering Wheel /Rain Sensing Wiper option.... went looking for a wheel with the Adaptive Steering and Heated... about 1,800 if I remember correctly.
Just picked up my 450 yesterday. My 17 had as, the 450 does not. Only difference I can see at this point is alot of wheel turning when parking to get full turn. No difference when driving. Not that big of deal and it took 1k off the truck price.
I went from a 19 with AS to a 22 without it, it can be added after the fact but you have to get a 22 wheel it appears looking at the wiring schematics 22 is different than 21 and down. I was all set to add it after the fact, I’ve had my truck since September and I don’t feel enough of a difference to warrant tracking down or ordering a wheel to be worth the expense. The steering wheel will run you more from ford than the option cost originally. You’re not missing anything
I went from a 2018 F250 Limited with AS to a 2022 Platnium wo AS.
I found backing up with a trailer and AS was odd. I prefer backing the platinum/trailer without the AS.
