AOD Question

I have a 1986 F-150 4x4, carbureted 302 and a C6 transmission that blew today. My question is is if an AOD from a 1992 F150 will work? When did they start adding computers to the transmissions? Thanks in advance

the AOD doesn't use any electronic controls. It does require a throttle valve cable or linkage which must be properly adjusted. '93 was the last year, and the '88 to '93s are the better units. I think the flex plate is unique to the AOD also so you should check that and take it if needed. The '92 is EFI right? It might even be a roller motor. I will check on that and get back to you.

1992--first year for rollers in trucks:

Swerving suggestion: Get the engine and transmission.

You can put your carb setup on top of it, get the TV cable/link figured out and motor on with a few more horses and OD to boot.

Your engine already uses the 50 oz. imbalance, and probably has the roller block but not the roller cam. If the '92 motor is shot, it will still have the parts to upgrade your engine.

You probably mean the AODE, which was the computer controlled version of the AOD.....it came out in 1992.

The terms AODE and 4R70w are used interchangably by trans shops and parts suppliers to refer to the same computer controlled trans that was widely used in these trucks, the case is the same as the all mechanical AOD but the internals differ quite a lot
