Probalby not a bad idea for the heater,
but I'd err on the side of safety in that I would ensure I had TOP of the line cords, heaters, etc...
a short anywhere in the system could cause more than your windheild to be defrosted
or the heat from a heater may overheat something flammable inside ...
but if the compnents are right... a heater that cycles on and off at a certain temp may be just the ticket !

Of course I am refering to a ceramic heater with adjustable temp. around 50 degrees would be enough to do the job. There is no glowing elements in a ceramic. Also it would be hooked up to a GFI outlet in my garage with a heavy duty cord(wifes Mustang is in the garage, truck has to sit out in the weather). I wouldnt think of cranking the heater all the way up for one thing the combination of the engine heater and the ceramic on high would overload the circuit and blow the GFI(not a bad thing as far as saftey). With the timer on for just about 2 1/2 hrs I think it would be more then enough to do the job of heating the oil and taking the frost off. When I try it out I let all ya'all know
Not cold enough right now. 5 inches of snow last night, turned to rain this morning that how Maryland weather goes
